A first journey to the Andaman Islands often begins with the same question: Havelock or Port Blair?
The better answer is rarely one or the other. These two islands offer entirely different experiences—and the contrast between them is what can make an Andaman holiday feel complete.
Choose Havelock for life beside the sea
Havelock Island, officially Swaraj Dweep, is where the pace of the journey begins to change.
At Munjoh Ocean Resort, mornings arrive through palms and sea air. Guests can walk from their villas towards the resort’s private-beach setting, spend long hours outdoors and return to the water as the light changes.
This side of the journey suits travellers looking for unhurried beach days, diving and island excursions, time together without a crowded itinerary, sunrise, moonrise and clear night skies.
For most first-time visitors, three or four nights allow Havelock to feel like a stay rather than a hurried stop.
Choose Port Blair for history, discovery and perspective
Port Blair—officially Sri Vijaya Puram—is more than the place where a flight lands or a ferry begins.
The city connects travellers to the islands’ history, museums, food, Chidiya Tapu, Baratang and journeys towards North Andaman. It also offers a different natural rhythm: hillside greenery, remarkable sunsets and, on rare clear nights, the possibility of seeing a moonbow around an unusually luminous moon.
Munjoh Island House provides a quieter base away from the conventional city-hotel experience. Its suites, pool and garden setting allow guests to return from a day of discovery to somewhere intimate and personal.
One or two nights may suit a simple arrival or departure. Travellers interested in history, Baratang or the landscapes beyond the city should allow more time.
The itinerary we would choose
A balanced first journey could include one or two nights in Port Blair, three or four nights on Havelock and an additional Port Blair night before an early flight when ferry timings make it sensible.
Ferry schedules can change because of weather or operational conditions. Check current sailing information and leave sensible time between ferry and flight connections.
The Andamans are not one experience repeated across different islands. Havelock brings you close to the sea. Port Blair connects you to the history and wider geography of the archipelago.
Together, they tell a far richer story.
